Tvål is a Canadian company, based in Newfoundland, that was started in 2003 by Dr. Anna Hellqvist, a Swedish-born chemist, biologist and esthetician, and her partner Dr. Jason Bailey, a also a biologist and a native Newfoundlander. In 2005 they were joined by Jason’s brother, Robert, who was a makeup artist and business manager for a very popular and successful makeup company. All three together developed a range of natural, affordable, simple beauty products that are made by hand in small batches. Their skin and hair care products are fun, simple and effective, and their line of mineral makeup, Smink (meaning makeup in Swedish) has great application and blendability, while being good for your skin.

I have quite a long hair, and although I don’t style it too much, I do use blow drier on it all the time, which can lead to some damage. Usually a good conditioner is enough to keep it manageable, and some hair oil on the ends, but every now and then I like to use a good, hydrating hair mask. I love masks that are fast and simple, not to add too much time to my hair routine – drying it takes so long already. Tvål sent me this girly Pink Cotton Candy Hair Mask to test and I couldn’t wait to hop in the shower and try it.

The mask is enriched with citric and silk amino acids to leave hair silky smooth and shiny, and it’s a 5-minute mask. It can be used in shower instead of a conditioner, or a very small amount on dry hair as a leave-in treatment to prevent frizz and split ends.

Ingredients: Aqua, Incroquant BSB, Glycerin, Citric acid, Fragrance, shea butter, silk amino acids, Diazolidinyl Urea (and) Iodopropynl Butylcarbamate.

The mask comes in a simple, plastic tube that is filled to the brim. Be careful when opening it, since it starts to come out immediately. I was grateful that Tvål secured the cap with a blue sticker, so that it doesn’t open by in transit. I was afraid that scent would be too sweet, but it’s really not. It’s a grown up twist on the cotton candy scent, very light not too sugary, girly, but not childish.

The mask is very thick, but still lighter than some of my conditioners. It feels airy and comes out of the tube easily, so if you keep it resting on the cap, you’ll be able to use every last drop of it. I use the mask in the shower, after washing my hair, and apply about the same amount as a conditioner. I gently detangle my hair, tie it up, and continue with showering, shaving, etc. I rinse it out at the end, and it rinses easily.

Although quite light in texture, the mask leaves my hair extremely smooth and moisturized. As a matter of fact, my hair is so smooth that it doesn’t hold any wave, although it’s naturally wavy. The scent lightly lingers in ym hair the first day, and it goes away by next morning.I really love the effect this mask has on my hair, and wouldn’t mind exploring other scents. Tvål also offers the mask in Clean, and unscented version for those sensitive to scents.

All hair masks are priced at $18, and Tvål offers 5 scented and one unscented version. They all sound yummy, and one tube will last for months, and even longer with less frequent use.
