Tvål is a Canadian company, based in Newfoundland, that was started in 2003 by Dr. Anna Hellqvist, a Swedish-born chemist, biologist and esthetician, and her partner Dr. Jason Bailey, also a biologist and a native Newfoundlander. In 2005 they were joined by Jason’s brother, Robert, who was a makeup artist and business manager for a very popular and successful makeup company. All three together developed a range of natural, affordable, simple beauty products that are made by hand in small batches. Their skin and hair care products are fun, simple and effective, and their line of mineral makeup, Smink (meaning makeup in Swedish) has great application and blendability, while being good for your skin.
You may already know that I’m addicted to lip balms. I have permanently dry lips, that can get badly chapped during colder months, so I have to moisturize them all the time, throughout the year. I prefer natural lip balms, because you ingest at least some of what you apply to your lips, not to mention what gets absorbed through the skin. I was grateful to see that Tvål included two of their lip balms in my review package, the Herbal Garden and the Lemongrass Mint varieties.
All Tvål lip balms are made with beeswax, cocoa butter, and sweet almond oil, with additional flavour and/or essential oils.
The balms come in the usual plastic packaging, with a twist bottom. I prefer these tubes over tins, because they make the product more convenient to use on the go. The two lip balms I tried have a slight scent, that is not too strong, but it’s still noticeable. Lemongrass Mint lip balm has a nice lemony scent at first, then the mint kicks in, while the Herbal Garden one smells mostly minty, with some herbal undertones.
Both lip balms are equally soft and melt upon contact with my lips easily. They glide smoothly, and I really don’t need much. I get a bit of oily shine, not too much, and my lips do feel hydrated. I feel like I need to reapply less or as often as other natural lip balms, and there is no waxy residue on my lips once the lip balms is gone/absorbed/eaten. The peppermint oil in both lip balms provides a perfect amount of cooling and tingling, not too overpowering, but noticeable.
One of the best things about these lip balms – there is no taste, apart from the peppermint if you lick your lips right after applying the balm. If you taste the lip balms after the tingling feeling mostly goes away, there is no discernible taste. I love that there is no sweet taste added, like some companies do, because sweet balms tend to make me lick my lips, which dries them out. These balms are just perfect the way they are, with no sweet taste.
Thee balms are everything I need from a lip balm. They hydrate, smell nicely, but not too strong, and there is no waxy feeling that I’m not really fond off. I already used up the Lemongrass Mint one, and working on the Herbal Garden, that’s how much I love them.
Tvål lip balms are available in 9 varieties: Exfoliating with Sugar, Ginger Peach, Herbal Garden, Lemongrass Mint, Caramel Apple, Clean (Unscented), Mandarin Vanilla, Maple, and Cinnamint. Cinnamint is their brand new flavor, with both cinnamon and peppermint gently irritating for lips to provide with some plumping. They retail for $5.00 each, which is line with other natural lip balms on the market.
