California North is a skincare company based in Sausalito, California, founded by Jim Miller in 1990. Their first products were created for active, outdoor enthusiasts that needed quality products to counteract the visual effects of aging, sun, environment, and other lifestyle factors. Their products are full-sized, reasonably priced and formulated for both men and women. The company is cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny certified.
I am a type of person that tailors my shower items according to the mood. If I want to relax, I go for scents like lavender, to wake up, citrus and mint, if I feel extra girly, I use floral and sweet soaps and body washes. You can see now why I always have at least 3-4 body washes in use, and love to try new ones. Same with body moisturizers – I like to pair them up with my body wash, and need to have different consistencies. I use light, non greasy ones when I want to be quick, and thick, rich ones for slow, spa-like days when I slow down and unwind. I keep discovering new and better body moisturizers, and I got really excited to try the Gelskin Wash and Action Moisturizer by California North.
All the California North products are full sized, and come in either 8 or 16 oz (236 or 473 ml) pump or spray bottles. I always prefer pump bottles over squeeze ones, because I tend to drop bottles all the time, especially in the shower. These pumps are a bit slow though, but they offer good control over how much product you want to dispense. The bottles are plastic, white and quite minimalistic. I like the combination of crisp white bottle and olive green logo and lettering. They can fit any bathroom decor, and I think they would be appealing to both men and women.
Like I already mentioned, I am always open to trying new body washes, and especially fond of any that has a citrus scent. The California North Gelskin Wash is formulated with natural botanical cleansers, rich in antioxidants. Like all of their products, this one is tested and safe for both face and body, men and women. It’s great to have a product like this around if you have a big family and don’t want to have separate face and body washes for everyone. I do have to point out that this body wash contains SLS, in case you are avoiding sulfates.
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamide Mipa, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Chamomile) Extract, Camellia Oliefera Leaf Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract, Glycerin, Benzophenone-4, PEG-150 Distearate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Butylene Glycol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Fragrance (Parfum).
The body wash is a clear gel-like fluid that lathers when used, but not too much. It has a great citrus scent that is not too strong, but I can definitely enjoy it in the shower. It’s one of those scents that instantly energizes and wakes me up. The body wash is easy to rinse off, and I found the product gentle and non-drying, but with my very dry skin I did have to moisturize after using it (I rarely find a body wash that I don’t have to moisturize after). I used it as a face wash in the shower, too, and it was gentle and surprisingly not stripping.
Unlike the body wash, that is great, but nothing unique, this California North Action Moisturizer is a really different product. It contains various botanicals to nourish skin, and AHA to peel off any remaining dead skin. It’s formulated to be non-greasy and to suit every skin type. This product is described as a “one-stop moisturizer to heal, sooth, nourish and rejuvenate”.
Ingredients: Aqua, Allantoin, Panthenol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate,Xanthan Gum, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Dicetyl Phosphate (and) Ceteth-10 Phosphate, Lauryl Laurate, Cetyl Alcohol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Cyclopentasiloxane,Cetyl Palmitate (and) Sorbitan Palmitate (and) Sorbitan Olivate, Glycolic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Ceteareth-20, Arctium Lappa Root, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Geranium Maculatum Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon Peel) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract, Parfum, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol & Caprylyl Glycol & Ethylhexylglycerin & Hexylene Glycol.
Action moisturizer has a unique consistency, closest to a gel-lotion. It’s milky white, and I appreciate that they don’t add any color to it. It’s easy to use, spreads very easily over skin and most of it absorbs instantly. I do get a tiny bit sticky, but the feeling goes away after about 15 minutes. It’s a great moisturize-and-go product, but don’t forget to use sunscreen afterwards, because acids can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.
I really love the addition of acids. I developed bad KP (keratosis pilaris, a.k.a chicken skin) on my upper arms after using some new wax last summer, and it never went away. I tried some other acid products, but they didn’t help me, or they were just too sticky. California North doesn’t state that this lotion is supposed to help with KP, but with it’s gentle exfoliation it actually helps keep my bumps smaller and skin more even. I can still notice the bumps, but they are not as red. As soon as I stop using the lotion, my KP comes back, so you should use it consistently if you have this problem.
I really love all the California North products I’ve tried so far. The body wash is really good, but the action moisturizer is amazing. It really helps remove all the dead skin that scrubs don’t get off, and it evens out my skin. It helps with my KP, which was an unexpected “side-effect” of the acids in the product.
California North products are available for order on their website, and they ship to USA, Canada, UK and the rest of Europe. These two products are available in two sizes, 8 and 16 oz, and retail for:
- Gelskin Wash: 8 oz bottle $24, 16 oz bottle $39
- Action Moisturizer: 8 oz bottle $29 USD, 16 oz bottle $49
I actually prefer smaller sizes, because I have a smaller shower, but it’s definitely more economical to buy the bigger bottles. Both sizes come with a pump. Both of these products are effective, and I’m especially in love with the Action Moisturizer, and wouldn’t mind getting a big size.
Do you spend a lot of time outdoors? What do you do to keep your skin glowing. Did any of these products pique your interest?
