Tvål is a Canadian company, based in Newfoundland, that was started in 2003 by Dr. Anna Hellqvist, a Swedish-born chemist, biologist and esthetician, and her partner Dr. Jason Bailey, also a biologist and a native Newfoundlander. In 2005 they were joined by Jason’s brother, Robert, who was a makeup artist and business manager for a very popular and successful makeup company. All three together developed a range of natural, affordable, simple beauty products that are made by hand in small batches. Their skin and hair care products are fun, simple and effective, and their line of mineral makeup, Smink (meaning makeup in Swedish) has great application and blendability, while being good for your skin.

To be completely honest, I avoid reviewing bath products. The only tub I have is in the spare bathroom, and the faucet drips if not closed properly. We rarely use it, so we never get around fixing it. I can’t stand wasting water like that – if you waste water, just watch a few documentaries showing what people in Africa drink. It can be a hassle to go back and check if the faucet is dripping or not. That’s why I rarely take real baths and just head for the shower. But when I received these three great smelling bath products from Tvål, I had to take a chance with the tub and have a proper bath. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy relaxing 30 minutes all for themselves?

Out of the three bath products I tested, the one that intrigued me the most is the Tub o’licious Peppermint. This interesting product is a small bag filled with wonderful ingredients. It contains soothing oats, uplifting peppermint, moisturizing cocoa butter and soy milk, which all together make for a great bath experience.

Ingredients: Oats, milk powder, cocoa butter, sodium cocoyl isethionate, polo wax,  fragrance.

I tied the bag to the faucet and let the water run over it when filling the bath. The peppermint scent is the most prominent one, but I could smell some oats in the background. There is no added color, but the mixture does foam a bit. I then used the bag to scrub my skin. The bag provided me with a gentle polish, and I could feel the milky soft ingredients coming out of it.

Tub o’licious can be used in the shower, too. Just get it thoroughly wet, and use it all over your body for as a gentle scrub and body wash. The only disappointing thing is that this product is not reusable. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that the bag never dries completely after use, and it got a bit stinky, so I had to toss it away.

The other two bath products I received were more familiar to me. I’ve decided to try the Foaming Shea Bath Treat in Peppermint as a foot bath, and boy was it a treat! This product is a hybrid between a bath bomb and a bath melt. It foams, but also contains lots of shea butter for added hydration. According to Tvål, these bars also contain an emulsifier to disperse the oils in the water, rather than leave a ring around your tub. They recommend half the bar for a regular bath, and full for a real treat. I used about a third for a foot bath, and it was more than enough.

Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Sodium Cocoyl Isothionate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, zea mays (corn) starch, Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera), canola oil, emulsifying wax NF, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit.

The bath treat itself is not too big, the photo below is to give you a sense of scale. It’s easy to divide it into pieces with bare hands, and it crumbles nicely. It needs to be under running water to melt, but if you just crumble it into a full bath tub, you can speed up the melting process if you just squeeze the pieces under water a bit. The peppermint bath treat has a minty scent, and feels a bit cooling, but not too much. It’s also very moisturizing. I didn’t really have to apply a foot cream after soaking my feet with this wonderful product.

And just how lovely is that blue peppermint leaf outline 🙂

The Foaming Shea Bath Treat in Mimosa is quite similar in performance to the Peppermint version, with a different color and scent. It’s the same size as the previous bath treat, and comes in a pale peach color with golden glitter on top. It has a gentle floral citrus scent.

Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Sodium Cocoyl Isothionate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, zea mays (corn) starch, Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera), canola oil, emulsifying wax NF, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, perfume.

I enjoyed the bath treat in Mimosa in a bath, and it was a pleasant experience. The scent is nice and gentle, but not my favorite, so I added a few drops of orange essential oil to my bath. My skin was soft and moisturized afterwards, and there really was no oily ring around my tub.

Although I don’t take baths often, I was happy to receive these bath products. They provided me with an excuse to have more baths, unwind and relax. I enjoyed them all, but the Tub o’licious will have to be my favorite. I wouldn’t mind trying it in some other scents, too.

Tub o’licious comes in various scents, with Chocolate Orange, Earl Gray and Lavender and Almost being my top picks. Foaming Shea Bath Treats also come in multiple scents, and I really couldn’t choose a favorite, most of the scents are appealing to me. Both the Tub o’licious and Foaming Shea Bath Treats retail for $4.50 each.
